Drag and drop
Picking something up with the mouse or finger, moving it, and letting go to put it somewhere new.
What it is
Drag and drop lets people move things directly: reorder a list, move a card between columns, drop a file onto an upload area. It feels natural because it mimics moving physical objects.
Good drag and drop shows a drag handle (often six dots) so people know what's draggable, shows where the item will land while dragging, and works on touch screens. Offer a keyboard alternative for accessibility.
Say what can be dragged, where it can go, and what happens when it's dropped.
How to ask for it
“Let me move the tasks around to change the order.”
“Make the task list reorderable with drag and drop: show a six-dot drag handle on each row, a placeholder line where the task will land, and save the new order as soon as it's dropped. Support touch devices.”
"Move them around" could mean up/down arrows; "drag and drop" names direct manipulation and the prompt covers handle, preview, saving, and touch.
