What it is

A domain is the human-friendly name people type to reach your app. You rent it yearly from a registrar, then point it at your app's host using settings called DNS records.

A subdomain is a prefix on a domain you own: app.acme.com or help.acme.com. It's common to keep the marketing site on acme.com and the app on app.acme.com.

DNS changes can take minutes to a few hours to spread across the internet.

How to ask for it

Vague

“I want it to have a normal web address.”

Precise

“Serve the app at app.acme.com (a subdomain of the domain I own) and redirect the old platform URL to it. Tell me exactly which DNS records to add.”

Why it works

"A normal web address" leaves the name and setup open; naming the domain and subdomain makes the configuration exact.
